Many caravaners and motorhome drivers add to their living space whilst out in the open air by adding an awning. Offering extra space as well as protection from both inclement and hot weather, they make a great addition to the whole outdoor experience. They come in a range of sizes and colours and differ in their construction and materials. Always make sure you store your awning correctly.
Insuring your awning will help to replace it if it is damaged by a fire or stolen, but you will need to avoid unnecessary damage from condensation causing it to rust and from the damage caused by sticky residue that can cause decay and staining.
Many policies will cover the awning in the contents and accessories part of the policy but always check with your insurer and don't forget to add the awning to the policy if bought after the initial insurance has been quoted. The awning should be waterproof but the affects of air pollution, excessive cleaning with detergents and bird mess can cause it to loose its effectiveness. You could use a water sealant to render the awning waterproof if necessary.
Ventilating your awning is extremely important. Using a groundsheet for the total area which will help you keep it dry. Always store the awning in a dry and clean area when not in use. Always let the awning dry out before storing and do not store the framework assembled, ensure the poles are stored alongside rather than inside one another. |
